What we liked
- + 8-inch (203mm) Newtonian with XLT coatings has the aperture needed for galaxies, nebulae and planets
- + StarSense app shows on-screen arrows to targets and builds a list of the best objects for your time and place
- + Stable manual altazimuth Dobsonian base keeps setup simple, with no motors or alignment steps
Trade-offs
- - At $879 it costs far more than a basic 8-inch Dob, since part of the price is the app-guidance system
- - It needs a compatible smartphone to get the guided finding, and the dock adds a step at setup
