# Best Altazimuth Mounts for Simple Aiming (2026) Source: https://stargazernest.com/best/altazimuth-mounts Updated: 2026-09-15 Publisher: Stargazer Nest. Our score is an editorial rating out of 10 (fit 35%, features 25%, build 20%, value 20%), not a customer rating. Method: https://stargazernest.com/how-we-research#our-score An altazimuth mount moves simply up-down and left-right, matching how we naturally point, which makes it fast and intuitive for visual observing. Compare payload capacity, the smoothness of the bearings, and whether it offers slow-motion controls or freestyle pushing. Some models add encoders or motors for object location while keeping the simple two-axis motion. Because there is no counterweight or polar alignment, setup is quick, though the design does not track the sky's rotation for long exposures. These suit visual observers, grab-and-go users, and beginners who want to aim and look without fuss. They are less suited to deep-sky astrophotography, where field rotation spoils long exposures. A practical tip: pair a quality altaz head with a solid tripod rated above your telescope's weight, since a smooth mount on a flimsy leg set still shakes, and stable, damped views matter far more than any extra feature. ## Picks ### 1.
